Network Security – What is it and how can my business reduce risks?

An IT / data network provides your business, your employees and yourself access to the internet and other services such as VoIP. A network allows employees to communicate and share information with clients, customers, as well as each other.

When setting up a network, security is vital as it is the key to keeping that sensitive information safe, and as more private data is stored and shared on vulnerable devices, your network security will be increasingly become more important and necessary.

As an IT professional it is important to understand, how you can make sure your network is secure in order to protect the business and the following are examples of possible attacks:

Data Theft, which happens when a hacker gains unauthorised access to obtain information from the network  by stealing credentials or file content in transit between two network devices.

Password Attacks, when someone attempts to access data or files with the illegitimate use of a password, either through guessing, stealing or cracking a password.

Malware Attacks, which occurs when a malicious code (malware) inserts software onto a network device. Malware can easily spread from one device to another, making it very difficult to remove it.

To put this in context, here are some facts relating to cybersecurity:

  1. 95% of cybersecurity breaches are caused by human error. (Cybint)
  2. 88% of organisations worldwide experienced spear phishing attempts in 2019. (Proofpoint)
  3. 68% of business leaders feel their cybersecurity risks are increasing. (Accenture)
  4. On average, only 5% of companies’ folders are properly protected. (Varonis)
  5. 36 billion records were exposed through data breaches in the first half of 2020 alone. (RiskBased)
  6. 45% of breaches featured hacking, 17% involved malware and 22% involved phishing. (Verizon)
  7. Between January 1, 2005, and May 31, 2020, there have been 11,762 recorded breaches. (ID Theft Resource Center)
  8. The top malicious email attachment types are .doc and .dot which make up 37%, the next highest is .exe at 19.5%. (Symantec)
  9. The worldwide information security market is forecast to reach $170.4 billion in 2022. (Gartner)
